About
I'm a photographer and digitisation manager working with art collections. As Collection Digitisation Manager at the Art Gallery of South Australia, I lead Image Services: the Gallery's collection photography, its FotoWare image library, and its copyright and licensing service. My team is two photographers and a copyright officer.
Our studio photographs everything from paintings and works on paper to jewellery and coins, using a Phase One IQ4 and Capture One. Images for print are colour corrected and proofed against the original. Some works can't come to the studio, so I also shoot in situ. Monet's Water Lilies was lit and photographed in the gallery for Monet to Matisse, and ran at full resolution on the facade, Adelaide trams and at Adelaide Airport.
I also design the systems behind the images. I lead the Gallery's FotoWare rollout, including its connections to EMu and the website. I built the SharePoint system staff now use to request photography, and introduced barcode scanning to record artwork details in Capture One.
Rights are part of every image. I've led image clearance for several Tarnanthi exhibitions and publications, working directly with artists, communities and art centres, with Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property at the centre of the process. I wrote the Gallery's orphan works policy.
I care about building capability. I designed a one-on-one training program that took a photographer who had only shot works on paper to photographing jewellery and numismatics. I've recruited a team member from our volunteer program, and I write the risk assessments and safe operating procedures for our studio and installation work.
I studied photography at the University of South Australia and have worked freelance since 2015, shooting for fashion brands and Adelaide and Melbourne Fashion Weeks, with events and portraits published in print and online. I've completed artwork handling training with Artlab Australia.
